NAHU chose to honor Commissioner McCarty with the Spirit of Independence Award in recognition of his unwavering support of health insurance agents as vital to the service and protection of American consumers and for his tireless efforts to protect that role from threatening provisions of the healthcare reform law, both in his position as Florida Insurance Commissioner and as President-Elect of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
In his acceptance speech, Commissioner McCarty references a public hearing held in May of 2010 in Orlando. He described testimony given by FAHU's Joan Galletta on behalf of the agent community during which Joan recounted a moving testimonial from NAHU's publication Brokers Making a Difference. This collection of testimonials from health insurance agents around the country serves to illustrate the life or death impact agents' services have every day in the lives of consumers. Commissioner McCarty credited Joan's testimony as a turning point in the hearings and emphasized how crucial it is that the vital role agents play in the assistance and protection of consumers be communicated to our legislators.
FAHU leadership facilitated that Orlando hearing and FAHU continues to reach out to state and federal legislators and regulators on behalf of the health insurance community. Please don't miss your opportunity to communicate the importance of your contribution as an agent to your state legislators during the upcoming FAHU State Legislative Conference March 28 and 29 in Tallahassee. FAHU is grateful to Commissioner McCarty for his support and offers our continued assistance.
